Blog entry #2: Telling the Story of the Early Renaissance: 2.7

This chapter introduces the Art of the West or mainly the Art in Florence Italy and its Architecture.

Florence was a city with people called merchants. It was one of those cities where tyranny was not

allowed, but only the people and republic could run the government body(Art of The West 00:00-

03:58). The people of Florence took interest in Art, Architecture, and trading goods. Most importantly,

trading was the main job that made the people of Florence gain income or wealth, People usually

traded wool and it was also the center of the European banking system (The Early Renaissance 268).

Although, Florence was the center of banking system and trade route, it was most famous for its Art

and Architecture. There were two famous artists from Florence who were competing against each

other  one was Filippo Brunalleschi and the other one was Lorenzo Ghiberti, these two artists were

assigned to create a competition panel of the sacrifice of Isaac for  the North Doors of the Baptistery of

Florence(Florence and The Renaissance 271). As a result Ghiberti won the competition of art, however

Brunalleschi was still praised for his Architecture skills when he constructed the dome of Florence

Cathedral and the Foundling Hospital.

One thing I learned about the video is that all of the Artists like Donatello, Raphael, Michelangelo

and Leonardo, etc. were in influenced by Lorenzo Ghiberti and Filippo Brunalleschi from Florentine,

Italy made art in their own way, but behind those arts told a story or depicted a persons character. For

example, Piero Della Francesca made art that told the story of the Italian revolution (4:17-6:39). It gave

people a visual perspective on what caused the revolution, how did it end. Also, there were other art

sculptures that represented the body government of Florentine just to show other people how they ran

their government and what type group of government there were from lowest to highest. Most of all,

the arts that were made get mixed into every Architecture/Infrastructure trying to tell the whole reason

of why each Architecture was made and told what significance did it have throughout the history.

The difference between Chapter 12 and the Video Art of the Western World is that Chapter 12 goes

into more detail about the Renaissance in Florentine Italy. For example, look at page 266 of Chapter

12, it explains the general events of Florentine Italy and the art while the Video just explains about the

art. Also, the Chapter 12 texts seems to show all the timeline in chronological order of every events,

architectures, and arts that were made during the Early Renaissance. Additionally, many more artists

and their arts get introduced in Chapter 12 as you read further down. Furthermore, Chapter 12

introduces a technology, the very first printing press, which was made to make copies of the bible

while the Video Art of the Western World just introduced the Town of Sienna, which was the neighbor

of Florence.
